Step 01

Clarify Priorities

Strategy generates too many possible initiatives. Execution requires choosing which few matter most — right now.

Leadership time and organizational attention are finite. Spreading effort across too many priorities ensures mediocre progress on all of them. Ruthless focus on the critical few is what separates companies that execute from companies that try.

What To Do

Identify the 3–5 initiatives that will move the strategy forward most meaningfully this quarter
Test each "priority": does it have a clear owner and a measurable outcome? If not, it is not a real priority

Assign Clear Ownership

Shared accountability is no accountability. Every initiative needs one person who is responsible for its progress.

Step 03

Set Timelines & Milestones

A strategy needs deadlines. Without them, progress is open-ended and impossible to track in real time.

Milestones give leadership early warning when an initiative is off track. Quarterly checkpoints are long enough to show real progress and short enough to course-correct before problems compound into larger setbacks.

What To Do

Break major initiatives into 30-60-90 day milestones with clear completion criteria
Set quarterly review checkpoints where progress is formally assessed against plan
Define "on track" in advance — not at the review meeting, when the conversation becomes defensive

Step 04

Define the Right Metrics

Metrics should show whether you are moving toward the goal — not just whether the team is staying busy.

Why It Matters

Too many dashboards create noise. Too few metrics create blind spots. The right metrics are simple, directly tied to the goal, and connected to decisions that leadership can actually make when the numbers move.

What To Do

Select 2–3 metrics per priority that show actual progress toward the intended outcome
Distinguish leading indicators (predictive, earlier signal) from lagging indicators (historical, confirms the outcome)
Eliminate any metric that is tracked but has never changed a decision — it adds overhead without insight

Step 05

Build Accountability Rhythms

Execution improves when progress is reviewed consistently — on a cadence, not when someone remembers to schedule it.

Without structured review rhythms, priorities fade into the background of daily operations. Regular reviews create the pressure, visibility, and decision-making speed that keep execution alive through busy periods.

What To Do

Hold weekly tactical check-ins for active initiatives — short, focused, owner-led
Run monthly reviews to assess progress, surface blockers, and reallocate resources where needed
Conduct quarterly strategic reviews to evaluate whether the current priorities still match the strategy

Step 06

Adapt and Course-Correct

Execution is not about following the plan perfectly. It is about recognizing when the plan needs to change — and changing it.

Why It Matters

Every plan degrades as reality unfolds. The organizations that execute best are not the ones who followed the plan most rigidly — they are the ones who recognized the signal early, adapted deliberately, and fed what they learned back into the next cycle.

What To Do

Distinguish "off track because of poor execution" from "off track because the plan was wrong" — the response is different
Update milestones, owners, and metrics when the business evolves — don't manage to a plan that is no longer real
Close the cycle by carrying lessons from this execution period into the next planning round

Execution Is the Strategy

The six steps form a cycle, not a checklist. Step 06 feeds back into Step 01. Priorities shift. Owners change. Metrics that mattered last quarter may not matter this quarter.
