The Four Work Together

Capital sourcing, allocation, reporting, and management are not independent functions. They are four dimensions of one connected system. Sourcing determines what capital is available. Allocation decides where it goes. Reporting shows whether it is working. Management protects the organization's ability to keep operating and investing as conditions change.

Companies that treat these as separate activities — or that neglect any one of them — tend to find that the gaps show up in the worst moments. A CFO's role is to keep all four aligned with strategy and with each other.
